Peckham Soul

Catalogue No:

Celebrate a landmark night in South East London music history with this new Peckham Soul print, commemorating Sade’s performance at The Albany Empire, Deptford – 5th August 1983.

In the summer of 1983, Sade were on the cusp of international breakthrough. Fronted by the effortlessly magnetic Sade Adu, the band had emerged from London’s early-’80s jazz-funk and soul scene, building a devoted following through intimate club performances and word-of-mouth acclaim.

Earlier that year, they released their debut single 'Your Love Is King' (first issued independently in 1983), a smooth, sensuous statement that captured the band’s signature blend of jazz sophistication and soul restraint. Live favourites such as 'Smooth Operator' were already in rotation, hinting at the success that would soon follow with their debut album 'Diamond Life.'

The Albany Empire show came during this formative period — part of the band’s early UK live circuit, when they were honing their sound in theatres and arts venues across London and beyond. These performances laid the groundwork for the breakthrough year ahead, as Sade transitioned from underground favourites to chart-topping stars.

The gig took place at The Albany, then widely known as The Albany Empire — a vital cultural hub in the heart of Deptford. With roots stretching back to the 19th century as a music hall and community venue, The Albany became, by the 1980s, a cornerstone of South East London’s creative life. Intimate yet electric, it was a space where emerging artists connected directly with local audiences — a fitting stage for a band on the rise.

The Print

Designed by Craig Jamieson, this Peckham Soul print captures that moment: the cool poise, the understated glamour, and the quiet confidence that defined Sade’s early live shows. The design nods to the era’s typography and soul aesthetics, anchoring the gig within the rich musical tapestry of Deptford and the wider boroughs of South East London.

Peckham Soul Prints celebrate the history, music and unique cultural diversity of South East London — from intimate theatre gigs to genre-defining movements. This piece honours a night when global soul refinement met local community spirit, just before the world was introduced to one of Britain’s most enduring musical voices.
