About The Venue, New Cross
Opened in 1925 as the New Cross Super Kinema, The Venue has a rich history as a place of entertainment. From 1925–1927 it operated as the New Cross Super Kinema, featuring a cinema on the ground floor and the New Cross Palais de Danse above. It was renamed the New Cross Kinema 1927 and from 1950 simply 'Kinema'. Between 1950–1960 it was taken over by Gaumont becoming Gaumont New Cross. Closing as a functioning cinema in the 1960’s, it became the Harp Club, hosting Irish traditional music and dance and a community point for South East London’s Irish Community. From 1989 until 2020 it reopened as The Venue, becoming a central music hub for indie bands and the Britpop scene, hosting acts like Oasis, Radiohead, Suede, and Blur.
