Organised by The Friends of Earth in order to raise funds to fight Whale extinction, the gig was introduced by Kenny Everett saying “…you are about to witness the next biggest thing to God…”

It was a landmark Bowie concert for a number of reasons. First it sees Bowie’s Ziggy incarnation at the peak of its live powers. By all accounts an utterly mesmerising performance. Secondly, for the inclusion of Lou Reed on the bill. Bowie, an evangelist for the Reed stating "He’s still playing and he’s now in England and this is his very, very, very first appearance anywhere in England. Ladies and gentlemen - Lou Reed"

Reed and the Velvet Underground were still very much a cult band in the UK, having commercially tanked in their native America, and with next to zero promotion in the UK market, Reed would have still been pretty much an unknown entity to the audience.

Also on the bill were Marmalade and JSD Band, as Bowie runs through a mixture of singles, Ziggy Stardust and Hunky Dory highlights, along with a mix of Velvet Underground and Jacque Brel covers. A landmark gig by a landmark artist.
