Despite being ‘name dropped’ by the likes of R.E.M, Kurt Cobain and Sonic Youth, Union Carbide never really received the recognition they deserved whilst a functioning band.

The story begins when Ebbot Lundberg met Patrik Caganis at a U.K. Subs gig, 1981 and the formation of both a friendship and a punk band Sure Tråkings Trio that followed.

The band split but fast forward a few years later and Ebbott and his friend Emirk Larrson tried out for a band called Heartbeat City. Caganis, a Heartbeat City fan, was persuaded to join and with Björn Olsson on guitar and Henrik Rylander drums, and eventually Per Helm on bass, a new band called Union Carbide Productions played their first gig in June the 14th 1986.

With amps collapsing on the audience and their skate punk mates causing mayhem, a reputation for the chaos and truculence was created that would follow the band throughout their career.

With a host of combustible line-up changes, infamous gigs - included the hallowed CBGB - and three blistering albums later, the band split in 1993.  They were always against it. Resolutely anti-biz, they singularly failed to charm both the movers and shakers in the industry and music journalist, being characterized, often unfairly, as spoiled rich kids.Ebbot Lundberg, Ian Person and Björn Olsson went on to form Soundtrack of Our Lives, finding recognition and extensive commercial success with both Swedish and international audiences. But with your ‘fuck you’ charm, we at Peckham Soul salute Union Carbide productions and their legacy of fantastic music.
