Nick Drake / John & Beverley Martin (1971)

Painfully shy, Drake only played a handful of gigs during his lamentably short career. A factor which no doubt played a role in his record label’s difficulty in promoting him. Regarded in contemporary terms as ‘legendary,’ he was however ostensibly ignored by both critics and the wider music buying public during his lifetime
A factor determining why Drake would have actually played the gig was his very close personal relationship with John and Beverley Martin. All were label mates on Island Records, but beyond this and the broader camaraderie shared amongst the musicians of the late 60’s British folk scene, Linda Thompson has noted that they actually loved each other. ‘It’s was quite Greek, without the sex’ and Drake was a frequent visitor to the Martyn’s Hampstead flat, living only one stop down on the Northern Line at Belsize Park.
Played 5 moths after the release of his debut LP Five Leaves Left, it was, like all Drake’s gigs, regarded as a particularly unelectric performance. One attendee of the 1,500 strong audience noting that "Nick Drake opened the show, staring at his feet, playing extraordinary finger-style guitar and disappearing as quickly as possible as though to deny he'd ever been there at all."
Promoting their just released Stormbringer album, John and Beverley were very much the star performers of the show. Martyn’s career marking a very different trajectory from that of Drake, as his ground breaking albums such as Solid Air and Bless the Weather brought both critical acclaim and commercial sales which extended well beyond that of his initial folk audience.
