Night Life
The exuberant "Will You Be My Lover" is a fabulous opener though. Maxine always brought a breathless enthusiasm to the hyper-fast songs she recorded. "You Are Everything" is a cover of the Stylistics’ big hit and just as beautiful in Maxine’s hands. The bouncy, optimistic vibe of her signature tune reappears on the Motown Throwback "Love Hit Me", which was a hit single in the UK. The suggestive "Get It Up For Love" is the slinkiest, sexiest thing she ever recorded.
Side Two contains three more covers—first, The Delfonics' "Didn't I Blow Your Mind (This Time)". Next, is a nice version of Friends of Distinction’s 1970 hit "Love Or Let Me Be Lonely". In lesser hands, the covers on this album could have become tedious, but Maxine’s voice is such a joy and the arrangements are ear-pleasing, making it all alright. "How Much Love", originally done by Leo Sayer, is sublime—with fantastic percussion and makes me totally nostalgic for the mid-Seventies. "Right Now" closes the album as the funkiest number with a mysterious streak in it.
