M-M-

Original 1988 pressing from the CBS Jazz Masterpieces series, in near-mint condition.

A journeyman musician until joining Miles' first great quintet in late 1955, Coltrane's relationship with Miles is one of the most important and celebrated associations in jazz history; their four years together yielded classic, still influential recordings, and provided Coltrane the musical freedom and experimental drive with which to launch his own legendary career.

In addition to two selections ("Little Melonae" and "Budo") from Davis'  first session for Columbia, this LP contains the complete performance at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival. When one considers that Davis' sextet at the time included such giants as tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, altoist Cannonball Adderley, pianist Bill Evans, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb, it is not surprising that fireworks resulted. Brilliant music by some of the giants.
