Misty in Roots (Gothenburg, 1979)

A British Reggae outfit formed in the crucible of Southhall in London, they, like many of their UK Rastafari brethren, were no longer prepared to accept the racism and discrimination they felt that their parents, the original Windrush generation, had meekly endured.
Along with other UK Reggae bands such as Steel Pulse, Aswad, Matumbi, Cimarons and Blake Slate, they championed a higher critical consciousness which in many ways saw its logical outcome in the Brixton and Toxteth Race Riots that griped the UK in the early 1980’s.
This 1979 concert coincided with there now legendary ‘Misty over Sweden album.’ This live album was recorded not in Sweden, but as the Counter-Eurovision concert which took place at the Cirque Royal in Brussels on March 31 and April 1, 1979 and was organised by the non-profit association CAFIT (Collectif d'Animation pour la Formation et l'Information Des Travailleurs).
Always a band with a strong political orientation, they had been heavily involved in Rock Against Racism, a grass roots UK political movement which sought to challenge the racism within British society. This was an association precipitated by an attack on band member Clarance Barker who was severely beaten by SPG (a specialist branch of the Metropolitan Police) when taking part in an anti-National Front rally in Southhall.
The band went on to release a number of critically acclaimed albums throughout the 1980’s, including Wise and Foolish (1981), Earth (1983), Musi-O-Tunya (1985) and Forward (1989). Always remaining friends, the members have sine participated in a number of special reunion gigs since they stopped functioning as a full-time band.
Kåren
The Student Union of Chalmers University in Gothenburg, Kåren, like student unions all over the world, actually had the resources to stage and pay bands. From personal recollection I can remember the Pixies playing to an empty student Union in Glasgow. Without University subsidy, it’s difficult to see how many of the bands would have actually been able to play so many venues.
With Kåren hosting bands such as Psychic T.V, Echo Bunnymen, Ebba Grön, Kai Martin & Stick!, Nico, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Triffids, Union Carbide Productions, Sonic Youth, Pavement, Primal Scream, Broder Daniel and a then unknown Stone Roses, all we can say is thank God there for subsidies! The world is poorer without them.
