Deptford Soul City
Dave Godin, David Nathan and Robert Blackmore embarked on the Soul City project in 1966. It was the beginning of a three year journey which would see Soul City open up the world’s first exclusively Soul music record shop outside of America, intially in Deptford, South East London, and then Covent garden, and a start a label which gave Gene Chandler his first UK hit, and whose other releases were central to the development of Northern Soul.
Peckham Soul’s Craig Jamieson has complied a mix including Billy Butler, Major Lance, Allen Toussaint, Staples Singers, Bessie Banks, Sly and the family Stone, Bobby Womack, Staples Singers, Willie Tee and other tracks that capture the labels finest moments and music associated with the project.
